  • Maan Karate beats Jilla and Veeram

We have been presenting the Chennai city box-office collections of every new release in town, every week without fail. Though there have been more than 50 straight Tamil films this year till date, only very few have been able to open well and then sustain for some weeks.

This year, Veeram, Jilla and last week's new release Maan Karate hold the unique distinction of having garnered the elusive 'Grand Opening' tag in our weekly Behindwoods box-office reports. While Veeram and Jilla released on the same day and ate into each other's business by splitting all the big screens, Maan Karate has virtually taken over every notable screen in the city, be it single screens or the multiplexes despite the release of another noted movie, Oru Kanniyum Moonu Kalavaanigalum.

Every big screen in the city (be it Sathyam, Devi, Abirami 7 Star, Sangam, Woodlands, Shanti, Albert, Udhayam, Kamala and many more) is now screening Maan Karate on all the 4 shows, whereas Jilla and Veeram only had 2 shows each in big screens like Sathyam, Sangam, Kamala and split the other screens like Woodlands, Shanti and Albert.

Thanks to its humongous opening over the weekend in many big screens over all the 4 shows, Maan Karate has managed to outdo Jilla and Veeram in terms of opening weekend collections in Chennai City. Here come the details of the opening weekend gross of these 3 'Grand Openers' from Chennai city, based on Behindwoods' weekly box-office analysis.

Maan Karate - 1.41 crores from 303 tracked shows
Jilla - 1.32 crores from 321 tracked shows
Veeram - 1.23 crores from 306 tracked shows
